How to Clean a Fabric Sofa at Home

To clean a fabric sofa at home, vacuum it every week with an upholstery brush, blot spills at once with a clean dry cloth without rubbing, and use only a cleaner that the fabric's care label allows, tested first on a hidden area. Velvet needs brushing along the pile, bouclé must never have its loops pulled, and no cover should go in the washing machine unless its label says so. For a stubborn mark, mould or a damp smell, ask a professional rather than layering household products.

Start with the care label

Identify the fabric and read its cleaning code before you start. Some fabrics allow water-based cleaning, others only a specified solvent, and some only vacuuming or light brushing. Do not choose a method from the fabric name alone, and if the label is missing or unclear, ask our team before you treat the fabric.

A weekly routine

  1. Vacuum the seats, the back and the seams with an upholstery brush at a gentle setting.
  2. Plump and turn loose cushions, where the design allows it, so they wear evenly.
  3. Brush velvet lightly along the pile to lift pressure marks.
  4. Wipe dust from the legs and any exposed wood with a dry soft cloth.

Stains: what to do first

Stain First step Then
Coffee, tea or juice Blot at once with a dry white cloth, from the edge inwards A cleaner approved for the fabric, tested on a hidden spot
Oil or food Lift any solids with a spoon; blot, do not spread An approved upholstery cleaner; a professional if it stays
Ink Act quickly, but do not use hairspray or home mixtures Specialist advice for a persistent mark
Pet hair A rubber glove or a lint brush over the fabric Vacuum with the upholstery brush
Damp smell or mould Stop adding liquid A qualified cleaner to assess the fabric and filling, and fix the moisture source

Fabric by fabric

  • Velvet: brush along the pile; blot, never rub; avoid heat and water unless the label allows them.
  • Chenille: vacuum often, as dust settles in the soft pile; blot spills and let the area dry fully.
  • Bouclé: vacuum gently; if a loop pulls out, trim it carefully rather than pulling it.
  • Woven and linen-look fabrics: blot quickly, as light shades show marks; test any cleaner first.
  • Faux leather: wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it; avoid oils, vinegar or unapproved conditioners.

What to avoid

  • Soaking the fabric: water can reach the filling and leave rings or a smell.
  • Rubbing a stain hard, which spreads it and damages the pile.
  • Bleach, kitchen cleaners, and mixing different products on one mark.
  • A hairdryer or direct heat to dry a wet patch.
  • Washing removable covers in the machine unless the label allows it; they can shrink and no longer fit.

Keep it clean for longer

  • Use washable throws on the seats used most, especially with children and pets.
  • Keep dark clothing such as new denim off pale fabric, as colour can transfer.
  • Keep the sofa out of strong direct sun where you can, and away from the air-conditioning outlet, which carries dust.
  • Choose the fabric for the room: our sofa fabric guide explains which fabrics are easy-care or water-resistant.

When to ask for help

If a mark does not lift, the fabric changes colour, or you are unsure which cleaner to use, stop and send your model name, order number and clear photos to our team on WhatsApp; we reply within 24 hours. The two-year warranty covers workmanship on new furniture; the fabric material itself, and normal wear or damage after delivery, are excluded. Our furniture care guide has the basics for every material.

A simple cleaning schedule

How often What to do
Every week Vacuum seats, back and seams; brush velvet; plump cushions
Every month Vacuum under the sofa and behind the cushions; wipe the legs
After every spill Blot at once, from the edge inwards; let it dry fully
Once or twice a year A professional deep clean suited to your fabric

Before Eid or guests: a quick refresh

  1. Vacuum the whole sofa, cushions off, including the seams and the frame.
  2. Treat any marks with the method the label allows, a day or two before, so they dry.
  3. Air the room and keep the sofa out of direct sun while you work.
  4. Plump and turn the cushions, and brush velvet along the pile.

Legs, wood and metal

Dust exposed wood and metal with a dry soft cloth; wipe marks with a cloth that is only slightly damp and dry it at once. Avoid soaking the joints and check the finish instructions before using polish or a disinfectant.

Questions about cleaning a sofa

How often should I clean my sofa?
Vacuum it weekly and deal with spills at once; a professional deep clean once or twice a year suits a sofa used every day.

Can I use water on a velvet sofa?
Only if its care label allows it. Otherwise blot the spill, let it dry and brush the pile.

Can I wash the cushion covers in the machine?
Only if the label says so. Many covers are not made for machine washing and can shrink.

Can I use a steam cleaner on my sofa?
Only if the fabric's care label allows steam or water; otherwise heat and moisture can mark the fabric or reach the filling.
