How to choose an ottoman
- Its job: for a seat, choose a height close to your sofa seat, about 45 cm; for a footrest, a little lower.
- Its shape: a round pouf moves easily between seats, square ones work as a pair in front of a sofa set, and a long one of 100–120 cm is a bench at the end of the bed or in front of a long sofa.
- The space: keep it 30–40 cm from the sofa as a footrest, and leave at least 60 cm for the walkway.
- The fabric: a durable, tightly woven fabric for daily use, or your sofa fabric for a calm, matching look.

For a seat, choose a height close to the sofa seat (about 40–45 cm); for a footrest, a little lower. Depths run from 35 to 90 cm, and each design page lists its exact size. The low 25 cm footstool slides under a coffee table or a console when you do not need it, and a pair of 50 cm square ottomans in front of a sofa set gives two extra seats and a footrest in one.
Round, square or long?
Compact poufs move easily and suit small rooms, or a spare seat by the dressing table. Square ottomans sit well in pairs in front of a sofa set, and the largest can hold a tray like a coffee table. Long ottomans of 100–120 cm seat two adults comfortably at the end of a bed or stand in front of a long sofa. Two compact poufs also tuck under a console in the entrance and come out when guests arrive.
Where to place an ottoman
As a footrest, set it 30–40 cm from the sofa or in front of a reading chair by the window. As extra seating, keep it within reach of the coffee table. A pair at the open end of a corner sofa gives guests a seat without closing the room. In a majlis, a few matching poufs give you flexible seating when guests arrive, and they line up along a wall afterwards. For an eleven-seat majlis, two to four poufs give extra seats for busy evenings without crowding the room.
Match your sofa or contrast it
Order the ottoman in the same fabric as your sofa for a calm look, or choose a contrasting texture. Ottomans are sat on, moved and used as footrests, so choose a durable, tightly woven fabric; velvet and bouclé look rich on a pouf but show marks sooner. For a family room or a child's room, a darker tone and an easy-clean fabric are the practical choice.
