Sofa Fabric Types and Which Suits Kids and Guests

Sofa Fabric Types and Which Suits Kids and Guests

For a family sofa in a Saudi home, choose a tightly woven chenille or another fabric marked easy-care or water-resistant, with a rub test of 30,000 or more, in a mid tone that hides everyday marks. Keep velvet and bouclé for rooms where the sofa is admired more than it is used. Every fabric in the KLIK Decor 3D studio can be filtered by texture, colour and care, and you can compare the samples side by side in our showrooms before you order.

The sofa fabrics you can choose from

The fabric library in our studio covers the main sofa textures. This is how they compare in everyday use.

Fabric Feel and look Best for Watch out for
Velvet Soft pile, rich colour, a slight sheen A formal majlis, a reception room Pressure marks and pile direction show; dust needs regular brushing
Chenille Soft, slightly ribbed, warm to touch A busy family room, a TV room Choose a tight weave; loose loops can pull
Bouclé Looped, textured, very soft look A calm living room, an accent armchair Loops can catch on claws, rings and zips
Woven Flat or textured weave, matte Everyday sofas, corner sofas Light shades show marks sooner
Jacquard A pattern woven into the fabric Armchairs and a classic majlis Large patterns dominate a small room
Linen look Natural, slightly rough texture A light, modern room Creases and shows spills unless treated
Jute look Coarse, natural, rustic A relaxed corner or accent piece Less soft to sit on for long
Faux leather Smooth, wipe-clean surface Dining chairs, a study Feels warm in summer; scratches show

What the rub test tells you

The rub test (Martindale) counts how many rubs a fabric takes before it wears. The fabric cards in our studio show values from 5,000 up to 100,000 rubs where the supplier gives them. As a rough guide:

Rubs Typical use
Under 15,000 Light use: an occasional chair or a formal room
15,000–25,000 An everyday living room
25,000–50,000 A busy family room or a majlis that receives guests often
Above 50,000 Very heavy use: children, a TV room used every day

A high rub count is not the whole story: a delicate pile or loose loops can mark before they wear through, so look at the texture as well as the number.

Fabrics for children and pets

  • Tight weaves. Chenilles and wovens with a close weave take sticky hands and claws better than loose loops.
  • Easy-care or water-resistant labels. Spills sit on the surface for longer, so you have time to blot them. Filter for them in the studio.
  • Mid tones. Greige, taupe, mid grey and warm brown hide crumbs and paw marks better than white or black.
  • Skip bouclé with cats. Its loops are the first thing a claw catches.
  • Washable throws and cushions. Cheaper to clean or replace than a whole seat.

Water-resistant and easy-care: what they mean

A water-resistant fabric slows a spill from soaking in; it is not waterproof, and it still needs blotting with a clean dry cloth straight away, without rubbing. Easy-care fabrics are made to release everyday marks with the cleaning the label allows. In our library, most of the water-resistant fabrics are chenilles, with some wovens, jute-look fabrics and velvets as well.

Sun, heat and air-conditioning

Strong sun fades every fabric over time, and dark or bright colours show it first. Keep the sofa out of hours of direct sunlight where you can, or use sheer curtains in the afternoon, as our furniture care guide advises. Leave a little space between the sofa back and an air-conditioning unit, so the cold air reaches the room rather than the fabric.

Choosing fabric for a majlis

  • Men's majlis. Velvet or jacquard in a deep colour gives a formal room; a heavy chenille is the practical alternative for a majlis used every week.
  • Women's and family majlis. Softer colours and chenille or woven fabrics that clean easily after coffee and sweets.
  • A touch of heritage. The library includes Sadu-patterned fabrics, which work best on cushions or one armchair rather than every seat.

Colour and fabric together

The same colour looks different in velvet and in a flat weave: pile catches light and looks deeper, while a matte weave looks lighter. Choose the colour on the actual fabric, in your own light, in the morning and in the evening. A neutral sofa with coloured cushions is the easiest way to change the look later.

Care basics by fabric

  • All fabrics: vacuum with an upholstery brush, blot spills without rubbing and test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
  • Velvet: brush in the direction of the pile; steam or water only if the label allows it.
  • Bouclé: never pull a loose loop; trim it carefully.
  • Removable covers: do not assume they can go in the washing machine; check the label.

Questions about sofa fabrics

Which sofa fabric lasts longest?
A tightly woven chenille or woven fabric with a high rub count, in a mid tone. Durability depends on both the number and the texture.

Is velvet hard to clean?
Not if it is brushed regularly and spills are blotted at once, but it shows pressure marks and suits a formal room better than a busy family room.

Does the warranty cover the fabric?
The two-year warranty covers workmanship on new furniture; the fabric material itself is excluded. Keep your original invoice.
