Modern Arabic Majlis Ideas for Saudi Homes
Updated
A modern Arabic majlis keeps the welcome of the traditional room, with seating along the walls and a clear centre, and gives it cleaner lines, calmer colours and fewer, better details. These ideas work in a men's majlis, a family majlis or a women's majlis, and in a large reception room as well as a small one. When you choose the seating, see majlis sofas for men's and women's majlis with sizes and prices.
Traditional and modern majlis: what changes
| Traditional | Modern | |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | Floor cushions or heavy carved sofas | Clean-lined sofas and long corner runs |
| Colour | Deep reds and golds throughout | A calm base with one accent |
| Pattern | Pattern on most surfaces | One pattern, used once |
| Tables | One large central table | Low coffee tables and side tables within reach |
| Light | A single chandelier | Layers of warm light |

1. Clean-lined seating along the walls
Choose long corner sofas or connected runs with low, straight arms and firm seats. A continuous line of seating looks modern and seats more guests than separate pieces. A U-shaped corner sofa frames the room; an L-shape leaves one wall free for a console or a display niche.
2. Calm colours with one accent
| Base colour | Accent | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Warm beige | Olive or terracotta | Warm and welcoming |
| Light grey | Navy | Calm and formal |
| Cream | Camel and brass | Soft and classic |
Keep the sofa fabric in the base colour and bring the accent into cushions, curtains and a rug, so the room can change without new seating.
3. Arabic details, used lightly
A geometric pattern in the rug or the cushions, a carved wooden screen or a pair of lanterns is enough. Too many patterns compete with each other; one strong detail gives the room its character. Arabic calligraphy works best as a single framed piece on the wall behind the head of the majlis.
4. Light and texture
Layer warm ceiling light with wall lights and table lamps for the evening. Mix textures, such as a tightly woven sofa fabric, a soft rug and wooden tables, rather than adding more colours. A little brass or bronze in a lamp or a tray catches the light without looking heavy.
5. Tables and serving
Low coffee tables or a set of side tables between seats keep cups within reach. Leave a clear path to serve coffee and tea, and give the thermos flasks a place of their own on a console near the entrance.
6. A modern majlis in a small room
In a room of about 3.5 × 4 m, a compact L-shaped corner sofa of 240 × 165 cm or 300 × 200 cm seats four to six guests and leaves the centre open. Choose a light base colour, raised legs that show the floor, a round coffee table that is easy to walk around, and two ottomans that slide under a console when they are not needed.
7. Men's, family and women's majlis
- Men's majlis: formal and upright, with long runs, firm seats and hard-wearing fabric.
- Family majlis: comfort first, with a chaise or deeper seats and fabrics that are easy to clean.
- Women's majlis: softer colours and a mix of sofas and armchairs, so guests can sit in smaller groups.
8. Curtains, rugs and walls
Full-height curtains in a plain fabric make the ceiling look higher: hang them from just below the ceiling, not from the top of the window. A large rug that sits under the front legs of the seating ties the room together, and a single feature wall, in wood panelling, a textured finish or a deeper paint colour, gives the head of the majlis a backdrop.
9. Details of hospitality
A modern majlis still needs its rituals: a console near the entrance for the coffee service and the incense burner, a small cabinet for cups and trays, and a tray table that moves to wherever the guests sit. Choose these in the same wood or metal as the coffee tables, so the room stays calm.
Ideas by room size
| Room | Seating | Guests, about |
|---|---|---|
| Small, about 3.5 × 4 m | A compact L-shape, 240 × 165 or 300 × 200 cm | 4–6 |
| Medium, about 4 × 5 m | A square corner of 300 × 300 cm, or two facing sofas | 7–9 |
| Large, 5 × 7 m and more | A U-shape of 8.4 m, or a corner sofa continued with a sofa set | 10 and more |
Mistakes to avoid
- Several statement pieces competing in one room.
- A pale sofa fabric in a majlis that is used every day.
- One bright ceiling light as the only light in the room.
- Furniture too small for the room: in a large majlis, short sofas leave gaps along the walls.
Plan it before you buy
Draw the room with its doors and windows, place the head of the majlis opposite the entrance, then fill the walls from there. In the 3D studio you can try the layout, the size and the fabric of a corner sofa or a sofa set before you order, and our showrooms let you sit on the seating and see the fabrics in daylight. Compare continuous and separate seating in connected or separate majlis seating.
Making mixed pieces look like one majlis
A modern majlis often combines a corner sofa, a few separate pieces and tables bought at different times. Three habits keep them looking like one room.
- Repeat one detail. The same arm shape, leg colour or piping on two or three pieces ties them together; the pieces do not need to be identical.
- Compare materials side by side. Put the fabric sample next to the table finish and the curtain in your own light, day and evening, before you confirm either.
- Check the real footprint. A slim-looking design can still be deep. Read the depth and the length of every piece, not only how light it looks in a photo.

Questions about modern majlis design
What sofa colour suits a modern majlis?
A mid-tone neutral, such as warm beige or light grey, hides daily wear and lets cushions carry the colour.
Can a modern majlis have a corner sofa?
Yes. Long corner sofas and U-shaped layouts are the most common modern majlis seating.
Can KLIK Decor make majlis seating to my size?
Yes, from the size options of each design or from your own plan, delivered and installed free in up to 15 business days.
