Men's Majlis Design: Layout, Seating and Sizes
Updated
An Arabic men's majlis works best with continuous seating along the walls, a clear centre for serving coffee and tea, and a table within reach of every guest. Plan about 60–70 cm of seat width per guest: a 5 m wall seats seven to eight people. Start from the room's size and the number of guests you receive on a busy evening, then choose the seating that fills the walls without crowding the centre. Our men's majlis sofas list sizes and prices: corner sofas from 6 m and 11-seat sets, made to order or ready to ship.
Start with the head of the majlis
The seat facing the entrance is the head of the majlis, where the host or the most senior guest sits. Plan the longest run of seating on that wall, so every guest who comes in sees the host first and the host can see the door. Keep the entrance side open, or seat it lightly with armchairs or ottomans.

Layout: along the walls
Line two or three walls with long runs of seating so every guest can see the host. A U-shape suits a square room; two facing runs suit a long, narrow majlis. Leave at least 90 cm between the seats and the walkway, and keep doors, windows and air-conditioning units clear.
How many guests will your majlis seat?
| Seating length | Guests, about |
|---|---|
| 3 m | 4–5 |
| 5 m | 7–8 |
| 8 m | 12–13 |
| U-shape, 4 + 5 + 4 m | 19–21 |
Layouts by room size
| Room | Layout | Guests, about |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 4 m | L-shape along two walls | 10–11 |
| 4 × 6 m | Two facing runs on the long walls | 14–15 |
| 5 × 6 m | U-shape on three walls | 18–20 |
| 6 × 8 m and larger | U-shape, with a second row of armchairs if needed | 25 and more |
A long majlis usually combines pieces: a corner sofa for one or two walls, with straight sofas or a sofa set continuing the line. Choose pieces from the same design and fabric so the seating reads as one line.
Which sofas suit a majlis?
Long corner sofas with a backed return give the classic majlis line and keep every guest upright. KLIK Decor makes corner sofas up to 8.4 m of seating in the designs shown, including a U-shaped layout of 400 × 260 × 180 cm. If you prefer separate pieces, three-seat sofas and armchairs can line the walls too; a ready-to-ship eleven-seat set is three three-seat sofas and two armchairs. Look for firm seats about 45 cm high and 90–100 cm deep, so guests sit comfortably through a long evening. Add ottomans for extra guests.
Corner sofa or sofa set for a majlis?
| Corner sofa | Sofa set | |
|---|---|---|
| Seats on a 5 m wall | 7–8 in one line | About 6, across separate pieces |
| Look | One continuous line | Separate pieces with small gaps |
| Rearranging | A fixed layout | Pieces move easily |
| Best for | A formal majlis | A majlis that is also a living room |
Tables and serving
Use a long central table or a row of small tables so every seat has a surface within reach, about 40–45 cm from the seat. Side tables between pairs of seats keep cups close. Leave a clear path of 90–100 cm around the centre for whoever serves the coffee, and keep a side table or console near the entrance for the thermos flasks and the tray.
Fabrics and colours
A majlis gets heavy use: choose durable, tightly woven fabrics in mid tones, and keep velvet for a formal majlis that is used less often. Neutral walls with one accent colour in cushions or curtains keep the room calm. Darker fabrics hide marks; lighter ones make a small majlis feel larger. See fabrics side by side in a showroom before you decide.
Light, sound and air
Warm ceiling light with wall lights keeps faces lit without glare. In a large room, curtains, a rug and upholstered seating soften the echo so conversation carries. Place the air-conditioning so it does not blow straight onto the seated guests.
Comfort for older guests
Older guests sit and stand more easily from a firm seat about 45 cm high with arms to push up from. Keep a few such seats near the head of the majlis, avoid very deep or very soft cushions there, and leave a clear path from the door.
Mistakes that make a majlis uncomfortable
- Seats that are too deep or too soft, so guests sink back during a long evening.
- Tables out of reach, so cups end up on the floor.
- A centre crowded with furniture, leaving no path for serving.
- Seating with its back to the door, so the host cannot greet guests as they arrive.
- Too many patterns, with the carpet, curtains, cushions and walls all competing.
Planning for Ramadan and Eid
The busiest evenings of the year bring more guests than the majlis usually seats. Plan for them with ottomans and a second row of armchairs that can be moved in, and extra side tables for coffee, dates and water. Made-to-order seating arrives in up to 15 business days, so order new seating at least four to five weeks before the season.

Formal or modern majlis seating?
Some families want a formal, richly detailed majlis; others want clean lines that are easy to keep tidy. Both work when the seating is planned first and the style second.
- Formal majlis. Fuller backs, tufted or button details and a deeper colour such as burgundy, navy or bronze give a stately room. Keep the tables and the curtains calmer, so the seating stays the focus.
- Modern majlis. A straight back, slim arms and one calm fabric along every wall look ordered even with many guests. Add warmth with cushions, a rug and brass or wood on the tables.
- Square room. Seat the head of the majlis opposite the entrance and run the seating along three walls, with the table in the centre.
- Long rectangular room. Use two seating areas, or one long run on the long wall with a return towards the door, so guests at the ends are not too far from the conversation.
