How Many Seats Does a Sofa Set Need?
Updated
A standard sofa set has seven seats: a three-seat sofa, a two-seat sofa and two armchairs. That suits most living rooms; a majlis or a long reception room usually needs eleven seats or more. At KLIK Decor every ready-to-ship sofa set comes with seven or eleven seats, and made-to-order sets start from the seven-seat arrangement and change to the pieces you need. Use the sizes below to check what fits before you choose a design.

What is in a seven-seat set?
| Piece | Made to order | Ready to ship |
|---|---|---|
| Three-seat sofa | 190–230 cm wide | 220 cm wide |
| Two-seat sofa | 140–170 cm wide | 170 cm wide |
| Armchair (×2) | 85–105 cm wide | 88–95 cm wide |
| Depth | 85–100 cm | 88–90 cm |
Seat heights are 40–45 cm. Each design page lists the exact size of every piece.

Seven or eleven seats?
Count the people who sit together most often, then add two for guests. A family of four to five is comfortable with seven seats. If you host often, choose eleven: on our ready-to-ship sets, the eleven-seat version is three three-seat sofas and two armchairs, and every ready set comes both ways. Made-to-order sets can grow the same way, with a larger combination of pieces.
| Your home | Suggested seating |
|---|---|
| Up to four people, guests now and then | A seven-seat set |
| Five or six people, or guests every week | A seven-seat set and two ottomans, or a corner sofa |
| A large family or regular majlis evenings | Eleven seats, or a long corner sofa |
How much wall length do the pieces need?
Add up the widths of the pieces before you think about the room. A ready-to-ship seven-seat set is 220 + 170 cm of sofas plus two armchairs of about 90 cm: about 5.7 m of furniture. The eleven-seat version is three 220 cm sofas and two armchairs: about 8.4 m. Leave 40–60 cm between pieces for a side table or a way through.
How much space does a sofa set need?
Leave 80–90 cm in front of the sofas to walk and 40–45 cm to the coffee table. For a U-shaped arrangement of a seven-seat set, plan a floor area of about 4 × 3.5 m; an eleven-seat set along three walls needs a room of about 5 × 4.5 m or more.
Four arrangements that work
- Facing the TV: the three-seat sofa opposite the screen, the two-seat sofa and the armchairs at the sides.
- Conversation: the two sofas face each other with a coffee table between them and the armchairs at the ends.
- Open-plan room: the back of the three-seat sofa marks the edge of the living area, with the other pieces facing it.
- Majlis: the pieces along the walls, the centre clear for serving, and ottomans for extra guests.
Comfort: depth and seat height
A depth of about 90 cm with a 45 cm seat height lets most adults sit upright with their feet flat on the floor, which suits a majlis and long conversations. Deeper pieces, up to 100 cm, suit a family room where you sit back and lounge. If you are unsure, sit on both in a showroom: comfort is easier to feel than to read.
Made to order or ready to ship?
A made-to-order set starts from the seven-seat arrangement shown, and you can choose a larger combination, a smaller grouping or a single sofa, with the sizes and upholstery available for each piece. It is delivered in up to 15 business days. A ready-to-ship set comes in seven or eleven seats in the fabrics on offer and usually arrives in 1–7 business days. Delivery and installation are free either way.
Sofa set or corner sofa?
A set gives you separate pieces you can rearrange; a corner sofa seats more people in the same corner. If your room has one long corner, compare both on the corner sofas page, or read corner sofa or sofa set.
Living room or majlis: the same set, used differently
In a living room, the set faces the TV or a conversation area and the armchairs can turn towards either. In a majlis, the pieces line the walls, the armchairs sit near the entrance and the three-seat sofa takes the head of the room. If one room has to do both, choose seven seats with two ottomans: the ottomans move to the walls when guests arrive.
Adding ottomans and tables
Ottomans are the easiest way to add seats without adding a sofa: two ottomans give two extra seats for guests and serve as footrests the rest of the time. Our ottomans are made to order in your fabric, so they can match the set or carry an accent colour. As a rule of thumb, a coffee table about two-thirds the length of the three-seat sofa looks balanced, and side tables work best close to the height of the sofa arms.
Choosing fabric and colour for a set
A set has several pieces, so its fabric covers a large part of the room. A mid-tone neutral on the sofas, with the armchairs in the same fabric or a deeper shade, looks calm and hides daily wear. Keep pale colours and velvet for a formal room, choose tightly woven fabrics for a family room, and look at the swatches in daylight in a showroom before you decide. For day-to-day care, follow our furniture care guide.
Will the pieces fit through the door?
A three-seat sofa can be up to 230 cm long and 85–100 cm deep, and it arrives as one piece. Measure the width of the narrowest door, the inside of the lift and any turn on the stairs, and tell us about access restrictions before you confirm the order, so we can plan the delivery. Installation is included, and our team places every piece where you want it. Our guide to measuring doors and lifts lists what to measure.
Choosing a set you will keep for years
A sofa set usually outlives one wall colour and sometimes one home, so a few choices make it easier to live with later.
- Neutral upholstery travels well. Beige, grey, off-white and taupe sit with most wall colours and curtains; bring colour in through cushions, which are cheaper to change.
- Match the shade to the room. Pale fabrics keep a small room open; deeper shades such as navy, brown or olive suit a large room and hide everyday marks better.
- Ask about the construction. The frame, the joinery and the stitching are what the two-year workmanship warranty covers, so ask how the pieces are built and sit on them before you decide.
- Compare quality, not only price. A cheaper set that has to be replaced soon costs more over time than one bought once.
