Benches, stools and poufs: sizes

Most benches are 120⁠–⁠140 cm wide and about 45 cm high, the height of a comfortable seat. The bolster bench and the settee are deeper, and the settee has a back, 78 cm high, for sitting in comfort at the end of the bed. Stools and poufs are 45⁠–⁠50 cm across, and the daybed is about 191 cm long, close to a single bed, with a seat long enough to lie down for an afternoon rest. Each product page lists its exact size.

The right bench for your bed

A bench works best a little narrower than the bed: for a 180 cm bed, choose 120⁠–⁠150 cm. Storage, drawer and shelf benches add space for blankets, cushions and books, and the wall bench is fixed to the wall so the floor stays clear. The daybed makes a reading seat by the window in a larger room. At about 45 cm high, a bench is also comfortable for putting on shoes. Leave about 60 cm between the bench and a wardrobe or wall so you can walk past. In a small room, a bench without a back keeps the view to the bed open.

A stool for the dressing table

Choose a stool that slides under the dressing table, about 45⁠–⁠48 cm high, in the same finish or the fabric of your headboard. A round storage stool hides small things inside, while open-frame and tripod stools look lighter in a small room. If two people share the dressing table, a 120 cm bench can take the place of the stool, and a cushioned top is kinder for longer sessions at the mirror.

Upholstered or timber?

Upholstered benches and poufs feel soft and match a fabric headboard; timber benches and stools are easy to keep clean and suit a minimal room, and slatted or woven timber seats add a light, natural texture. Both come in the finishes of our bedroom families, and upholstered pieces are made in the fabric you choose, so they can pick up the colour of the headboard or the curtains.
