Measure the free wall at seat height, from obstacle to obstacle, and take off 10–20 cm at each open end so a door frame or a curtain is not blocked.
Measure beyond the wall
- Mark the doors, windows, fixed storage and the route through the room.
- Outline the furniture on the floor with tape: a sofa that fits the wall can still block a door or leave no room for a table.
- Check the depth as well as the width: a 90 cm deep sofa in a 3 m room leaves about 2 m for the table and the walkway.
- For a corner sofa, measure every side; a two-seat sofa is not always smaller than another model with three seats.

- One sofa and one armchair at right angles, around a small table: four seats, open centre.
- A compact corner with the chaise on the short side, so the walkway stays clear.

- A deep, oversized sofa that fills the room in both directions.
- A large coffee table that blocks the walk to the window or the balcony.
- Too many small pieces; start with fewer useful pieces and add accessories once the layout works.
- Dark, heavy curtains that close off the light.
A small majlis or guest room
In a small majlis, line the two longest walls with a compact corner sofa and keep the third side for two ottomans, which add seats for a gathering and move against the wall afterwards. One coffee table in the centre and a side table at the corner are enough. A calm, single fabric along the walls makes the room look longer.
