Sofa Styles: Modern, Classic, American, Turkish
Updated
A sofa style describes the look: modern sofas have clean lines, slim arms and raised legs; classic sofas have rolled or scroll arms, button detailing and decorative edging; neoclassical sofas keep classic shapes with less ornament; American-style sofas are deep and cushioned; Turkish-style sofas mix straight or rounded lines with decorative colour. The style tells you nothing about size or comfort, so choose the look first and then check the dimensions, the depth and the seat on the actual design.
To shop by style, browse custom sofa sets, curved sofas, classic sofas or American-style sofas.
The main sofa styles compared
| Style | What defines it | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern | Clean lines, slim arms, raised legs, one calm fabric | Apartments, family rooms, a modern majlis | Shows the fabric more than the frame, so choose the fabric well |
| Classic | Rolled or scroll arms, button detailing, decorative edging, turned legs | A formal reception room, a men's majlis | Takes more room than the seat suggests; carvings collect dust |
| Neoclassical | Classic outline with restrained detail and current colours | Homes that mix modern and traditional pieces | Works best with simple tables and lighting |
| American-style | Deep seats, large back cushions, rectangular forms | TV rooms and lounging | Check depth and, if offered, any reclining mechanism in the specification |
| Turkish-style | Straight or rounded designs with decorative colours | Living rooms and majlis with a decorative scheme | Coordinate the colour with curtains and rugs |
Shapes: straight, set or corner
A style comes in different shapes. A straight sofa suits one wall; a set gives separate pieces to arrange; a corner sofa brings connected seating into one layout. Compare the full footprint, the orientation and the walkways, and do not assume every corner sofa is modular or can be rearranged after delivery. For the choice between them, read corner sofa or sofa set.
How to recognise the styles in our range
The design pages describe each sofa's details, which tell you its style better than a label. To see the designs of one style together, browse our classic sofas or see our American-style sofas.
| Design | Details from the design page | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Audrey sofa set | Rolled arms and button detailing around a straight back | Classic |
| Everleigh sofa set | Diamond button detailing around the back and inside square arms | Neoclassical |
| Lola sofa set | A high channelled back sweeping into flared sides above slender legs | Modern with a classic touch |
| Masa sofa set | Sculpted curves and flowing lines, a soft contemporary profile | Modern |
| TV sofa set | Rounded forms with flowing contemporary lines | Modern |

Colours that suit each style
- Modern: off-white, grey, light blue or a soft beige; dark grey looks smart beside polished wood floors.
- Classic: deeper shades on velvet or jacquard, such as burgundy, navy, bronze or cream with gold-toned details.
- Bold colour: a solid red, teal or mustard sofa works against calm grey or white walls; keep the rest simple.
- Any style: try the colour on the real fabric in your light; our sofa fabric guide explains how pile and weave change a colour.
Mixing styles in one home
A classic sofa can sit in a modern room if one detail repeats, such as the leg colour or the brass on a lamp. Keep the largest pieces in calmer shapes and colours, and let one statement piece, an armchair or a pair of ottomans, carry the stronger style.
Beyond the style: what decides comfort
- Seat height and depth: about 45 cm high suits most adults; deeper seats suit lounging.
- Back: loose cushions feel softer, a fixed back keeps its shape.
- Arms: rolled arms are comfortable to lean on but take width from the seat.
- The whole footprint: compare arms, back and legs, not only the number of seats.
- Construction: ask about the frame, the filling and the fabric; a style name or a timber name alone does not prove durability.

Styles for a majlis and for a living room
- Men's majlis: classic or neoclassical sets with fuller backs, or a modern corner sofa with a straight back along every wall.
- Women's majlis: rounded and curved designs, buttoned backs and softer colours suit a welcoming room.
- Family living room: modern or American-style sofas with deeper seats for lounging and television.
- Bedroom or study: a single classic armchair or a small modern sofa as an accent.
Style and budget
Across our made-to-order sofa sets, starting prices run from SAR 3,330 to SAR 6,729 for seven seats, before offers, whatever the style. The pieces, the size and the fabric change the total more than the style does, so compare designs you like at the same configuration. Our guide to how much a custom sofa costs explains what changes the price.
Questions about sofa styles
What is the difference between classic and neoclassical sofas?
Classic sofas carry rolled or scroll arms, buttons and decorative edging; neoclassical sofas keep the classic outline with less ornament and calmer colours.
Which sofa style is easiest to keep clean?
Modern sofas with simple lines and no carvings, in a tightly woven fabric; carved classic frames collect dust in the details.
Can I mix a classic sofa with modern furniture?
Yes. Repeat one detail, such as the leg colour or a metal finish, and keep the other large pieces calm.
